Researchers should check specific endorsement pathways before assuming they need a general portfolio. The official research guidance covers eligible appointments, fellowships, UKRI-endorsed grants and peer review. Each has its own evidence. A strong publication record does not remove a missing requirement for the chosen pathway.

Build a research appointment snapshot

Record your discipline, institution, job title, duties, contract or hosting period and funding arrangements. Distinguish the legal employer, host and funder. A university department name may not identify the organisation that needs to provide a letter.

In life sciences, also identify whether the role is principally research, clinical practice, product development or another activity. A broad scientific sector label cannot decide the route. Keep professional registration questions separate from immigration endorsement.

Check eligible appointment evidence

The appointment pathway requires an eligible role at an approved institution and specified recruitment and institutional evidence. The official page describes the job description and HR letter requirements. Ask the institution to review that exact list rather than requesting a generic employment confirmation.

Prepare a factual request with position, department, recruitment process and role description. The institution should confirm what it can truthfully certify. Do not ask HR to reconstruct an open competition or interview condition that did not occur; identify the actual facts and seek advice if they differ from the pathway.

Check fellowships and grants by exact record

For a fellowship, use the current eligible list and exact award details. For the UKRI pathway, check the approved funder and host, grant value and duration, remaining contract or hosting period, time allocation and your role. These are specific conditions, not a general statement that any funded scientist qualifies.

The current UKRI page includes a £30,000 grant covering at least two years, at least one year remaining on the contract or hosting agreement and at least half the person’s time on the grant, with further role conditions. Verify the complete test and supporting record with the host.

Use the grant record as a source

Find the award reference, approved database entry or required funder confirmation. Match the project title and organisation to your contract. If your job title is not named in the application, establish what evidence the chosen pathway requires for your actual contribution.

For example, being employed in a laboratory funded by several grants is not the same as demonstrating the relevant grant allocation and role. Ask the research office to identify which award supports the proposed application and what it can confirm.

Consider peer review on its own terms

Where another pathway does not apply, peer review may be relevant. Read its leader or potential-leader criteria, disciplinary body and document requirements. Do not treat it as an automatic fallback requiring the same institutional pack with a different heading.

Build a clear research narrative: the question, your original contribution, independent recognition and future work. Separate authorship position from actual contribution and explain interdisciplinary work accurately. A reviewer should be able to see what you did without inferring it from a long publication list.

Coordinate with the host early

Identify one institutional contact for the request and record who supplies each document. Research administration, HR and the principal investigator may hold different parts of the evidence. Give them time to reconcile the facts rather than sending an urgent request after an application date has been promised.

Keep confidential grant or unpublished research records secure. Use only what is appropriate for the process, with permission where needed. The public preparation worksheet should contain references and ownership, not sensitive scientific data.

Keep endorsement and professional plans distinct

Endorsement preparation, visa permission, employment start and professional registration can follow different processes. Put them on a shared timeline with separate owners. A proposed research start is not an immigration decision or permission to practise a regulated profession.

The resource below helps you select the pathway worth investigating and prepare a precise institutional request. It does not certify eligibility. Where the appointment or grant conditions are unclear, retain the facts and obtain a focused assessment rather than stretching them to match the guidance.

Worked review: several grants support one laboratory

An illustrative researcher works in a laboratory funded through multiple awards. Their contract names the institution, while the project team informally describes the role as “grant funded.” That description is insufficient to establish the exact UKRI pathway conditions.

The researcher asks the research office for the qualifying award reference, funder and host details, relevant period, allocation and role evidence. HR confirms the contract or hosting term, while the principal investigator explains the actual contribution. The matrix shows who can substantiate each statement.

If the grant route does not fit, the researcher checks other relevant pathways rather than asking the institution to certify facts that are not true. An eligible appointment, fellowship or peer-review route may raise a different evidence process; it should be assessed independently.

Prepare an institutional request people can answer

Send one concise summary with the official requirements and the specific records needed. Distinguish a factual confirmation from a legal conclusion. A research administrator may be able to confirm an award value and dates, but not decide the whole immigration application.

Keep the evidence consistent with unpublished research and confidentiality obligations. Where sensitive detail is unnecessary, use the appropriate award reference or approved institutional confirmation. The aim is a verifiable record of eligibility facts, not disclosure of scientific material unrelated to the application. Save the final institutional documents alongside the exact pathway guidance checked.
