A useful recommendation letter is specific, independently authored and grounded in the writer’s knowledge of your work. The requirements differ by Global Talent pathway. Identify the exact writer and format conditions first, then prepare a factual brief that helps the recommender provide their own assessment.

Start with suitability, not fame

Choose someone who can explain a relevant contribution and whose credentials meet the pathway’s requirements. A famous person who barely knows your work may have little factual basis for a useful letter. The brief should show why the writer is well placed to comment.

For digital technology, the current official instructions require three established experts who have known the work for at least twelve months and provide different examples. Arts and architecture have organisation and collaboration requirements of their own. Use the right page for the field rather than copying a universal letter checklist.

Map what each writer can actually corroborate

List the projects, period of contact and specific achievements known to each person. Aim for complementary evidence rather than three versions of the same anecdote. Keep the distinction honest: a collaborator can describe work they saw; an external expert may describe its reception or significance.

Do not ask a recommender to claim they supervised work they did not observe. Where a factual point needs another source, use that source. A strong letter cannot make an inaccurate history acceptable.

Prepare a factual briefing pack

Include a short explanation of the route, the current official letter requirements, your accurate CV and a few dated examples relevant to that writer. Add source links or records they can verify. Make clear that the writer should use their own words and correct anything they cannot confirm.

A useful prompt is: “Here are the project dates and the output you reviewed. Could you explain your own view of my contribution and its significance?” An unhelpful prompt is a finished page of superlatives asking only for a signature.

Discuss future plans without fabricating commitments

Where the official requirements ask about UK contribution and future plans, give the writer a realistic, specific account. Distinguish plans from signed contracts, invitations or offers. Do not turn a hoped-for collaboration into an institutional promise.

For example, an intention to contribute to a research community is different from a confirmed fellowship. The writer can discuss why your work may be relevant while keeping the actual status clear. Unsupported certainty can undermine an otherwise credible letter.

Plan enough time for review and signature

Agree a realistic date and the method for receiving the final letter. Senior writers may need administrative support to use letterhead or provide credentials. Track requests, responses and outstanding format items without repeatedly pressuring people into signing text they have not reviewed.

Keep personal contact details private. Use them only through the appropriate application process and obtain the writer’s agreement to the use. A resource download or public lead form should not collect the recommender’s CV or confidential letter.

Check format and factual consistency

When the letter arrives, compare dates, names, role descriptions and project facts with the rest of the dossier. Ask the author to correct errors. Do not silently edit a signed letter or reproduce a signature on a revised version.

Check the current page limits and required accompanying credentials for the actual pathway. Confirm that the letter is about this application rather than a generic employment reference written for another purpose. Keep a final approved version and remove confusing draft copies from the submission folder.

Use a recommender plan rather than a script

The resource below helps you track suitability, distinct examples and practical requirements. It deliberately does not supply a letter to sign. Authentic recommendations should reflect the writer’s judgment, including how they know the work and why they regard it as significant.

If you cannot identify suitable writers who know the work, treat that as a preparation gap. Do not buy a recommendation or ask someone to invent a relationship. A focused professional review can help determine what the existing evidence demonstrates and what remains unresolved.

Worked review: three well-known writers, one repeated example

An illustrative applicant identifies three senior people who know the same project. The initial request sends each a near-identical page of praise to sign. The recommender map shows that the letters would repeat one story and that one writer has little direct knowledge of the work.

The applicant checks the actual pathway’s writer conditions and selects people with suitable, distinct knowledge. One can discuss a contribution they supervised, another its professional significance and another a different relevant achievement. Each receives factual dates, source material and current official requirements.

The writers prepare their own assessments. If an author cannot support a claim, it is corrected or omitted rather than retained because it sounds persuasive. The applicant checks factual consistency and format, but does not silently rewrite a signed letter.

Use a request log respectfully

Track when you asked, the agreed date, supporting information sent and any outstanding credentials or signature requirement. Allow space for the writer to decline. A slow response may mean limited time, not a need for pressure or a more exaggerated draft.

Keep private contact details and letters out of public forms and shared promotional files. The purpose of the preparation resource is to organise a genuine professional recommendation, not create a reusable letter with interchangeable names. Authenticity and the writer’s actual knowledge are the foundation of its value.
